What We Do

The MSC works with scientists, fisheries, seafood producers and brands to promote sustainable fishing and safeguard seafood supplies for the future.  We set credible standards for sustainable fishing and supply chain traceability. Organisations meet these standards in order to demonstrate the sustainability of their products. The MSC ecolabel makes it easy for everyone to choose seafood which has been caught by fisheries which care for the environment.

You can trust that seafood with the MSC ecolabel is correctly labelled

From ocean to plate, MSC certified seafood is handled with care. This means it is correctly labelled, can be traced to a sustainable source and is never mixed with non-certified product.

Anyone who processes, supplies or sells MSC certified seafood must follow the MSC’s requirements for traceability.

We regularly check the supply chain to ensure MSC certified seafood is correctly labelled and from a certified source. Independent DNA testing shows that more than 99% seafood with the MSC ecolabel is correctly labelled.

The MSC Standards

When you see seafood with the blue MSC ecolabel, you can be sure it comes from a sustainable fishery that has met our Fisheries Standard. Businesses trading in these products have met our Chain of Custody Standard for traceability.

Fisheries and seafood businesses voluntarily seek certification to the relevant MSC Standard. These standards meet international best practice guidelines for certification and ecolabelling and were developed through consultation with the fishing industry, scientists, conservationists, experts and stakeholders.

The MSC Fisheries StandardThe Fisheries Standard measures the sustainability of wild-capture fisheries. The Standard is open to all fisheries, including those from the developing world.

The MSC Chain of Custody StandardThe Chain of Custody Standard ensures that the MSC ecolabel is only displayed on seafood from an MSC certified sustainable fishery.

Third party certificationTo ensure that certification is credible and robust, assessment to the MSC Standards is carried out by independent, third party assessment bodies.

Reviewing MSC standardsTo ensure that our program remains fit for purpose, the MSC Standards and Certification Requirements are reviewed periodically.
